An Intern’s Point of View: Hunting For My Passion at a Digital Marketing Agency
Being from Wisconsin, I always had a desire to embark somewhere out of the Midwest —preferably somewhere with a bit more sunshine. So before I finish my final semester of college at UW Oshkosh, I wanted to acquire another internship where I could gain more experience and develop actual skills that would further prepare me after graduation. I was familiar with Florida, so decided to focus my search there. As I rummaged through countless applications, nothing was really grabbing my eye. All the internship programs were depicted in a typical matter that seemed to be nothing more than busy work. I was craving something more — I wanted to learn hands-on and immerse myself into an integrated marketing experience. Then I stumbled across Simply180. With the application stating, “real hands-on training (no gophers), energetic work environment, impractical jokes, no boring meetings, and a kick-ass reference from ownership”, there was no way I could pass it up. I scored an interview, met the team, and here I am now.
A Day in the Life
As an intern at Simply180, you are not the one who gets menial tasks and grunt work passed onto you. Rather, from day one, I was trusted to become familiar with real work pertaining to real clients. I instantly discovered that the full time staff actually wants to provide me with a meaningful work experience in Internet marketing. Each day, I walk away with new knowledge I cannot simply get from a classroom. Within a few days, I was already assisting with research and writing, utilizing a variety of different software programs such as Hootsuite and HubSpot, and sitting in on client meetings. Currently, I am working with the client GSD Contracting where I help perform research to locate upcoming commercial projects in South Florida and conduct email and phone outreach to prospects to see if I can get our client considered as a bidder on commercial construction projects. I am also learning to track all these efforts using Salesforce, a CRM, or Customer Relationship Management, platform that companies use to manage and analyze customer interactions and data throughout the customer lifecycle, with the goal of improving business relationships.
Along with all of this, I am becoming familiar with blog optimization, SEO, marketing campaign management, and learning how to write for different digital formats. Ultimately, Simply180 allows me to dive deep into the various aspects of marketing. I am being exposed to the day-to-day business of an agency, acquiring knowledge about our clients’ businesses, and walking out of the door with vital skills.
Future Goals
Coming into this digital marketing internship, I did not have the mindset of doing it for the sole purpose of adding another line to my resume to impress prospective employers. Rather, I actually wanted to learn and comprehend all the things that go into agency work. As my college career comes to a close, I am anxious to discover what I am really passionate about. I am certain this experience will allow me to explore my interests and understand what best suits me. As I continue to gain hands-on experience with different aspects of marketing such as content development, research analytics, and lead generation, I hope to take these newfound skills I acquire and apply them to life after college.
