THE NEXT WAVE OF CHANGE IS COMING
Close to 300 people responded to or attended our A Plastic Ocean documentary film event on Saturday April 22nd at Gumbo Limbo, and committed to helping us turn this wave into a tsunami.
On behalf of our team at Simply180, Plastic Oceans Foundation, Gumbo Limbo and all of our sponsors, thank you for helping us Make a Wave of Change.
SINGLE-USE EFFECTS ON THE RISE
In the film, we learned the average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.
The proliferation of production and use of plastic products over the last 70 years is alarming:
- 100.7 billion plastic beverage bottles were sold in the U.S. last year – that’s 315 bottles per person
- More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year
- 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide – that’s a million used every minute
- Plastics enter our food chain when consumed by ocean life
Together we can change our community’s attitude and dependence on plastic within a generation. We are asking for your continued support to bring awareness among residents and businesses to make this change happen.
“I think the most powerful information from this documentary is the human health factor,” said Jason Cohen, CEO of Simply180. Cohen said, “If we can get local residents to understand that plastics on our beach and in our ocean is making its way into our bodies, it will hopefully encourage change.”
